I agree with you in that this is cool as both the html renderer of the
browser and the file accessor of the downloader would not fit together
into memory (at least on 64k systems).

It is implemented by posting an asynchonous event to the system event
queue to start the downloader and providing the URL as event data.

At the point the downloader gets started the browser has already quit
and therefore its memory is already freed.

I agree with you that these would be (the) major usability
improvements.

Or even convince pogrammes to improve the existing Contiki apps. Again
- this is not about 6502 assembler hacking. It's about programming in
C using your favorite editor on the PC...
