Hi Oliver, Thanks for the lengthly reply. I have Identified mine to be a rom3 board. I was just wondering if anything else was changed hardware wise to the sound circuitry. It seems to be identical and someone must have plugged something into the headphone jack and broke some internal pcb paths (kids maybe? it came from a primary school, who knows what they did when no one was looking)
It is not unusual to damage a 3.5mm headphone jack by wiggling the plug too forcefully. You may find that simply reflowing the solder joints of the jack will fix the problem. It's very unusual for printed wiring on the main board to go "open" unless it has sustained obvious trauma. It's much more likely that the solder joints have been cracked by physical stress, which can often be fixed by reflowing. -michael NadaNet networking for Apple II computers!
