iwm info wanted.

The weather is turning and I am looking for a winter project. I am thinking 
of trying to create a SD/MMC harddrive and only having a IIc with no 
expansion slots. I need it to interface with the floppy drive port on the 
back. I have read a few sources and fully understand the volume structure 
and the use of blocks, headers and such. What I don't know is what kind of 
signals are passed to and  from the IWM and the floppy drive. How does the 
card query the drive to find out what is attached? Signals? Timing?
