The cable I needed was the USB to Serial adapter; I happened to buy
from this guy on eBay:

(Look for USB to Serial Cable RS232 DB9.)  There are lots of other
similar gizmos for similar prices (<$10 US) on eBay.  This is much
better than $40 US I was seeing for Keyspan adapters.  Since I'm only
doing this to document the procedure for others, I wasn't willing to
shell out a lot of dough.

For other connectors like null modems and cables and stuff, I like
Radio Shack because they're close to my house and Jameco
(http://www.jameco.com/) because they have every possible permutation
of connector and stuff arrives at my door.
