Warped minds think alike. :) Image pointer a register that can have an up/down button attached and also put the CF reader slot on a ribbon cable so you can double sided sticky it to the A2 chassis in a convenient place.
Actually if you can reprogram the (CPLD?) and make the pads available, maybe a third party could make the external adapter/button/display combo.
