It is running fine. Playing Yahtzee with itself. Wouldn't there be
other problems? I can leave it running for hours. It is, of course,
on an APC UPS.
As long as it seems to work, great. But you said that it hung up
once on boot in this configuration, which means that *something*
is not always right.
If you have no further problems over the next weeks, then I'd be
willing to dismiss the boot fault as a fluke. But notice that you
can't get it to run stably with RAM cards that run stably in others'
systems, so, again, that's an argument that something in your system
is marginal, and that your current RAM card is more tolerant of that.
I did install an internal fan not to long ago. That shouldn't use too
much juice.
Are you saying that the RAM FAST card with Zip and a 6MB card would be
maxing the power supply?
Yes, if your power supply is 20 years old--and aren't they all?
If you are lucky (or your power supply is), it will support that load
fine, but if anything has aged unfortunately, then it will work in
favorable conditions (high line voltage, low ambient temperature) but
not the reverse, or it may fail when making a 5.25" disk access (motor
load on the +12v supply).
The actual failure modes can be low output voltage, poor regulation,
excessive electrical noise, etc. The usual components responsible for
ageing are the electrolytic capacitors, which suffer decreases in
capacitance and increased Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR).
