I have a friend who went from Apple IIc to Windows to Mac.
My first real computer use was with the Apple IIe (at school) and IIc (
my friend's). That naturally led to an Apple IIGS, which I bought used
at about the time Apple discontinued it. I quickly upgraded it with 4MB
of RAM, a hard drive and System 6, so it was used as a GUI computer most
of the time. I had plenty of exposure to MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 at work,
but always found I preferred Apple's GUI on the IIGS.
My friend with the Apple IIc was looking to upgrade and I suggested he
buy a Mac, but he wanted to go 'mainstream' so he'd have access to more
software (games really). He ended up buying one of the last-ever 486 PCs
sold, with the original version of Windows 95. When I first saw Windows
95 I thought 'Uh oh, Apple are in trouble now, this looks just like
their GUI'. Then I sat down and used it for a while. 'Ahh ha ha ha ha!
What a piece of crap!' It was faster than my IIGS and had a higher
resolution display, but it still didn't even match IIGS System 6 for
useability.
Eventually I migrated to the Mac because of its similarity to the IIGS,
and my friend later followed me once he saw how much less trouble I had
then he did with Windows. The fact that the Blizzard games (Warcraft II,
Starcraft, Diablo) were available for the Mac helped too, since that's
what we mainly ended up playing.
