Actually, they do offer a trial version. IIRC, it is the whole Cedega software with a limited number of days to use. Since Cedega is actually Wine with many things added for playing advanced Windows games, you can get the base system to use for free (at least you used to be able too.) Much of the features required to play games however are not included in that base but improvements to the Wine system are and these may not have made it back to the Wine developers yet. Note that the best way to go IMHO is to try the trial as the whole environment helps Windows apps to run smoother.
