Even without software, you might try swapping around some RAM chips. If
there's a bad one affecting 80 column displays it'll be one of the
first 8 chips on the card, (reading the chips like words on a page).
You can find the RamWorks III test software on asimov - it will do a
RAM test and show a graphical representation of where the dodgy chip is
located.
