That's a good point. A lot of cables connect the shield straight through, but it's often better not to.

Most times, both the monitor and the computer are plugged into the same
AC circuit, and share the same chassis ground.  Any potentials developed
across the shield resulting from ground currents will be *very* low in
comparison to the 1vpp video levels.  Audio has a much wider dynamic
range, and can therefore be more demanding.
