They managed to combine an incredibly fast disk I/O system with an
incredibly slow compiler (I believe it was itself written in Pascal).
Watching the dots crawl was a rather painful experience.  I seem to
recall Turbo Pascal being significantly faster.  Of course, this effect
is negligible on an emulator.

For best results, use Pascal 1.3 on a 3.5" disk.  It avoids some of the
swapping that takes place otherwise, but it does limit your choice of
emulators.
