I've managed to get it to work to his satisfaction, so there's no need
to worry about frying it. Even if I did, I have two spare Imagewriter
//s I could sell him. I also have about ten each of the black and color
ribbons, and he knows it, so if he ever needs new ones, he can just
call me. Thanks for the offer, anyway.

And the Imagewriter mechanism, by C. Itoh, is one of the most durable
and reliable DMP mechanisms on the planet.  Several times a year I walk
past a retail counter or a doctor's office and hear the signature sound
of that mechanism.  They just won't die...   ;-)
