Um, take the covers off to make it as loud as it can get. Orient it towards an open doorway to proagate the sound most effectively. Set it on a HARD surface and remove any padding used to dampen the sound.
The only other problem he's had with the printer is that he says it's been printing "fuzzy."
THis is probably due to the head being worn. Pop the head out or look at an H character and see if the sided the the H are perfectly vertical, all dots in a perfect row. Chances are that they ar enot and that the head needs to be replaced.
