For printer where the print head is connected via a flexible ribbon cable I usually did it this way (repeat at your own risk): remove the print head from the printer, dip its tip into some mild non-corrosive solvent (such as isopropyl alcohol), and then "print" some stuff that exercises all the pins. This gives the pins a very thorough washing. Of course you have to make sure you get it all back together correctly.
The Imagewriter I, at least, doesn't seem to use a flexible cable that goes directly to the head; so you couldn't do that. Maybe you could remove the "Druckwalze" (for which I don't know the correct English word, I mean the big black rubber roll) instead.
I don't have an Imagewriter II so I can't check if this would be possible for that printer.
