I feel your pain about laptops, and their battery life, or I should
say, lack of it.  I'm kind of spoilt with my calcs.  My HP48 calcs last
a year on 3 AAA, with a phenomenal on-time.  Just goes to show what is
possible when you start with power management as the first priority.
;-)  Once laptops can last a full _day_ of _continious_ usage, I
imagine they will become a lot more popular.

There is another option...

Have you tried snagging an old Pentium (MX or 2) laptop, and running
ApplePC on it?

The only big problem with older hardware, is drivers, (or the lack of
them), but Win9x on x86 should take care of the basics.
