That's a simplified version of how parts are normally installed in the
electronics industry.  The trick is to ramp the temperature up and down on a
set schedule.  One of the hardware guys in the office above me has a toaster
oven in his office, with a thermometer stuck in from the side, for exactly
this purpose.  (I think he only uses it for BGA components on prototypes.
Everything else can be hand-soldered easily enough, and production
quantities get sent out for assembly.)
