I should add that the bass reflex tube is now almost completely blocked in my woofer. That alone has dramatically increased the bass quality from a "unity boom" to something that actually sounds different for different pieces of music or sound -- though it reduced the raw volume. That's actually a good thing, however; I still keep the bass knob well below its middle position.
Wool (especially long-hair wool) seems to be pretty good at swallowing unwanted higher frequencies, which gives a much cleaner bass. You've probably already seen those pieces of woolen cloth lying inside transparent bass drums.
But take care not to let your amplifier overheat, if that resides inside the sub's case as with most cheap ampliefied speaker sets.
