The problem isn't JPEG artifacts, it's quantization and poor resolution.
The key is to scan at a high enough resolution and use grayscale to
prevent aliasing.

Good find though -- I wonder if the nibble magazine back issues have
similar issues with softstrips...

Probably, but probably with the same resolution issue.
