Tiling is *exactly* the kind of approach that can reduce processor overhead for a given pixel count--but, again, a large VGA display mode will require either a *lot* of 8x8 tiles (better tile resolution, but slower) or about 80x60 16x16 tiles (less tile resolution, but faster). -michael Music synthesis for 8-bit Apple II's!
