Yes, and I'm using a known good null-modem cable.

I'm using none. I interface the two with the cable, and at the Apple
II end, I type:

In this scenario, all I'm doing is redirecting "console" input and
output through Slot #2. In effect, letting the PC become the Apple
II's keyboard and text-mode monitor. I'm not running any other
software whatsoever, other than ROM-based Applesoft, occasionally with
DOS 3.3, or through ProDOS BASIC.SYSTEM.

No... I'm letting the system do all the work.
