stellar 7 has wireframe 3-d...no clipping, you can see objects
in the background through enemies and blocks....

the sky animation is simple, the stars move left/right when
you turn your vehicle right/left

neat explosions...

MAP of area is displayed in the upper right corner, shows enemies

it is in 3D but maybe Wayout or something simpler would be better to
start with...

wayout seems to be a very cool option.  solid 3-d (not wireframe)

the only thing missing from WayOut is 
enemies!
