Thanks!  I found that, actually, a few minutes after I posted my
message.  Then, on a whim, I googled Black Box and board game and I
found a version that works in Excel (I'd rather have the Apple II
version, but the Excel version works fine).  The version in the Ahl
book is a lot less interactive than I remember the Apple version to be.

Maybe I'll make it an exercise for my kids when they start to learn to
program.

Thanks for everyone's help.  It's great to see the Apple II community
still around.
