How does one go about replacing the battery in a ROM 01 IIgs? Looks
like I'm going to have to desolder it (which makes me REALLY nervous).
Also, where can I actually get a new battery?

Here's what I did (the scaredy-cat approach): Go to Radio Shack and get a
2xAA battery holder and 2 AA batteries. Clip the IIgs' battery leads close
to the battery and then just twist the remaining leads around the ones on
the battery holder. Mine's been running for about 2 years on the same set
of AA's and when they do need changing it will be even easier ;-)

Installing a battery holder is a fine idea.

I'm glad that your clock is happy (and accurate) with a 3v battery,
but there would be no question, and longer active life, with a 3-cell
holder and 4.5v.

Alkaline cells in this application should be good for essentially their
full shelf life, which Duracell now quotes at 7 years.
