Not that I've agreed with ANYTHING you've said... but you might want to
backup IMPORTANT stuff to a floppy and put it ALONGSIDE your cd...
That's right. I've 5.25" floppies that are probably as old as you are
(22 years and counting) that still work today. In the hundreds of
floppies I've had, I've had a few go bad, specifically certain brands.
And I've noted, with some interest that other retroputers have, that HD
formats generally are less reliable than DD.
As for CDs, I've had several scratch to the point of no return over the
period of the last 10 years, including a pack of CD-Rs that apparently
don't have a sealer coat over the reflective material. One started just
flaking away, rendering that CD useless. I hadn't even burned it yet.
As for flash drives? Don't have any experience with them, but I do
believe they are a nice alternative to CDs. Memory sticks and these
tiny MP3 players look nice.
See, we've come full circle. From the ROM packs of the old computers to
smaller versions called memory sticks and flash drives... and everyone
knows how reliable the ROM packs were...
