Re: Getting started with Apple II

What's the easiest way for me to get software from the Internet (I have no macs) to my new Apples? My only disk drives are the standard 5.25" drives.

You'll really need a Super Serial Card (SSC) in your Apple to get anywhere at all.

Do you have any bootable DOS 3.3 disks? If you don't, search for "dos33dmp.zip" to create some following the included instructions. SSC is required, beyond that, only a Windows PC with serial ports and a nullmodem cable. No special software is needed.

After that, you should transfer a dump of ADT to your apple down the nullmodem cable; the file in question is called "adt.dmp". It'll save itself to a formatted DOS 3.3 disk that must exist in Slot 6, Drive 1. ("Slot" refers to the slot number your disk controller card is in; the slots are counted left to right when you look into the computer with the keyboard end pointing toward you, from 1 up to 7. The one slot not in line with the other seven is the AUX slot. "Drive" refers to which of the two connectors on the controller card your drive is hooked to; or if you have the newer daisy-chainable drives, Drive 1 is the one next to the computer in the line, Drive 2 the one daisy-chained to Drive 1. The standard 5.25" booting drive in Apples is, by convention, Slot 6 Drive 1.)
