I've had this error come up as well. The cause on my GS has come from 
several sources. First, I would recommend that you shut the GS down for a 
few minutes. Then start your drive and finally, fire up the GS.

The $0C error sometimes comes up for the wrong reason. I had a Syquest 44 mb 
cartridge with bad blocks. After the drive tried to recover from the error 
so many times I would get this error. I changed the cartridge and the errors 
went away.

The $0C error can also come up if the internal temp of your GS gets too high 
or if the power supply is failing.

These are my experiences...
