You could play lots of things through it, provided you did it all in software.

Nope, the Apple II had it.  I think the Apple I even had it.  One bit
samples which had to be clocked out in software, granted, but sampled
output nonethelesss.

The Apple II could input audio through the cassette input.  One bit
only again.
