Maybe it was a mod.

And a curious one at that, since it would only light if the speaker
were disconnected.

The AppleCrate used //e boards, and the power LEDs are all visible,
as well as the rear-facing speaker LEDs.  Since the eight boards do
not have speakers connected, the speaker LEDs are handy as signals,
since they can be lit just by PEEKing the speaker toggle repeatedly.

I use them as "awaiting boot" signals, and in several parallel
programs, as "idle" indicators.
