I think the big thing everyone is missing is that USB is way too fast
for a SSC.  The reason the computer hung when a USB mouse was hooked
up could have been due to interrupts being enabled on the SSC and so
the SSC kept sending interrupts to the processor so fast that nothing
else could happen.

Then there is the fact that the SSC ROM has nothing in it to make it
act like any of the mouse interfaces that exist so there would be no
driver support in GS/OS for a mouse hooked up to a SSC.  The bitMouse
card that was mentioned, even though it uses serial mice from the PC,
makes itself look like an Apple mouse interface so that software for
both the 8 bit and 16 bit Apple II's could use it without needing
special versions or drivers written to support it.
