I liked it at first, but noticed how nice the PCs were getting, with faster processors and nicer graphics. This was in the late 80s/early 90s.Well, I think you are being a bit misleading. In the late 80's the PC had worse graphics than the Apple. The EGA card pushed them in the right direction but it was rather expensive. VGA however made a major leap in PC graphics. However, most businesses (the majority of PC owners at the time) really didn't care about graphics, ANSI served the purpose quite well with colored text and simple characters. There were other GUI's being developed but none had the market power of MS. Eventually, most PC's switched to Windows as their choices grew limited. Had options such as GNU Linux or BSD and X been available things might have been different.
X was available in the early 80's.. DesqviewX.. It gave DOS X ablity, as well as local multi-tasking.It wasnt marketed well however. And as you say, once windows hit the street it was all over for a lot of people..
