Re: Why still using Apple II?

Hi,
I used to have an Apple II+, then a IIe. It was my first computer. I
liked it at first, but noticed how nice the PCs were getting, with
faster processors and nicer graphics. This was in the late 80s/early
90s.
Well, I think you are being a bit misleading. In the late 80's the PC
had worse graphics than the Apple. The EGA card pushed them in the right
direction but it was rather expensive. VGA however made a major leap in
PC graphics. However, most businesses (the majority of PC owners at the
time) really didn't care about graphics, ANSI served the purpose quite
well with colored text and simple characters.
There were other GUI's being developed but none had the market power of
MS. Eventually, most PC's switched to Windows as their choices grew
limited. Had options such as GNU Linux or BSD and X been available
things might have been different.
The last couple days I've started getting all nostalgic and downloaded
AppleWin, been looking at pictures and reading about old Apples on the
Internet. I ran a few programs I used to use on the AppleWin emulator
and thought it's really cool how it emulates a II perfectly. But then
I realized why I quit using the Apple IIs. Nice machines for their
time, but unfortunately, terribly outdated.
For me, the Apple II is also a state of mind. It's simplicity is a goal
to strive for, unlike todays hardware with massive cpu power and
graphics systems more powerful than the PC's of the 90's. Even still,
these computers have their problems. Complicated hardware requires
complex software and complex software will inevitably have flaws no
matter which platform is used.
So my question is, what are you using yours for? You obviously have a
newer computer to post things on the web. Are you just playing around
with it or using it for productive things?
Good question. I don't use it for anything which couldn't be done on my
PC. I look at it like antique cars. Sure you have a newer model which
out performs the old ones but the older cars are still fun to drive.
I like playing many older games. I don't care much for the 3d shooters
and such. Neither do I care for the game systems that are available, but
I love playing the old RPG's. To name a few,
Legacy of the Ancients
Legend of Blacksilver
Questron 1 & 2
Might and Magic 2
The list goes on but I think you get the idea.
Cheers,
Mike T.
