If you're actually using the modem to make this connection (instead of a
null-modem cable), you'll either get CONNECT xxxxx if the connection is
successful or NO CARRIER if it isn't.  Over a null-modem cable, there is no
overt indication that the two machines will be connected (but pressing a key
on one computer should cause that character to pop up on the other
computer).
