Funny story.  For a better reply to your question, you may want to
check out the Apple I Forum at www.applefritter.com

Applefritter is the home of the Apple I owners club (originals and
replicas) and I believe the author of your book is heavily involved
with that site and someone there should have no problem assisting you.

As far as Apple II clones, Apple II emulators are all the rage now (for
Macs and PC's) and Apple II ROMS are downloadable from a variety of
sources for that very purpose.
