DDD Deluxe v4.0 and v5.0 use a completely different format from DDD v2.x
and DDD Pro v1.x. I believe DDD Deluxe can unpack the older DDD format,
but not the other way around.
The only advantage of DDD 2.1 over ShrinkIt is that DDD runs under DOS.
DDD Deluxe runs under ProDOS, so you might as well use ShrinkIt, which
is faster, compresses better, and is widely supported by applications
on programs other than the Apple II. DDD Deluxe isn't supported by
anything else, because (a) the format spec was never published, and (b)
nobody has done a disassembly.
If you do want to use the DOS version of DDD, make sure you're using v2.1,
not v2.0. v2.0, which I think was included on the disk image with SST,
will sometimes screw up the last sector on the disk. There are other
versions (e.g. v2.5), but for the most part those just add a checksum
to the filename.
In any event, the reason DDD, PBH, EPBH, and all the many variations are
hard to find is that everyone stopped using them when ShrinkIt came out.
