Hmm. It was originally comp.sys.apple, and I thought the "sources" and "binaries" groups appeared when it changed to comp.sys.apple2 (in an effort to dissuade Mac users from posting). That would've been late 1980s.
You could well be right. I got a VAX account (still have it - seldom use it) in 1983, and it seems I've been reading the Apple II stuff for nearly all that time. The earliest printouts I can find at this time mention both comp.sys.apple2 and comp.binaries...(1990).
Hard to remember these things 15-20 years later. :-)
