If elegance+capability is the basic formula, I say you take a games
console of a recent generation, add a keyboard and a harddrive (if
necessary), and write the OS from scratch. The hardware will certainly
be more elegant than a PC's decades of accumulated kludges. It may not
be competitive in the sense that you'll have a multi-GHz CPU, but it
will be competitive in the sense that with well-written software you'll
be able to do 90% of tasks better anyways.
