There IS talent to make this sort of machine. However there are copyright
and patent issues,
There is no end of good ideas. However nobody can agree on which approach
to go with.
There are plenty of volunteers. However nobody can make a living at it.
The parts and labour cost money and nobody is willing to put any of it
toward this project.
Nobody can agree on the processor. Does the project stick with the 6502
family or something different (G-whatever or Transmeta)? What sort of size
processor should be used? 16, 32, 64 bit, or higher?
How backward compatible is the hardware going to be?
How is the video going to be done?
What Operating System is it going to use? GSOS is not up to the task of
most LARGE (modern) applications without some tweaks. Larger filesystems
would be nice as would be the capability of handling more RAM. Would it be
better to tweak GSOS or to go with something like a full *NIX clone?
Then there is cost. Would anybody pay $1,500 (US) for one of these
machines? How about $1,200 or $1,000?
Will any of these machines be allowed out of the US?
All this takes time. Without the backing of a large company (good luck
getting this) we will all be very old by the time this machine comes to
be. This also means there will have been so many changes since the start
of the project, the new machine will STILL be old technology.
All this has been discussed before.
