As far as I can see, there -is- no way to modify the GBBS init string.
The only option you have is to select the modem brand/type. I may be
missing something, and if so I would be happy to be corrected on this.

I wonder if anybody has succeeded in communicating with GBBS via null
modem. My version was not the most recent version, and perhaps the most
recent version had more flexibiity in this regard. (I know this because
I discovered a note in code indicating that my version had 64 byte user
records and not 128 byte used by the 'new version').

I know GBBS is somehow aware of the null modem, because it refuses to
begin waiting for a call until I click on [connect] with HyperTerminal
on my windows machine. When I do so, GBBS commences to wait for a call
(but it refuses to do anything further).
