Re: Extending the range of null modem to 100ft.
Thank you all for your input. I will keep your suggestions in mind for
long distance NULL modem transfers.
For now, I've managed to shorted the actual distance between the
computers to approx. 20 ft. I have the following pieces connected
back-to-back between the PC and GS:
1. 6-ft. custom Apple serial cable (Mini-DIN 8 to DB-25)
2. RS-232 serial line tester
3. NULL modem adapter
4. 6-ft. PC modem cable (DB-25 to DB-9)
5. 20-ft. PC serial extension cable (DB-9 to DB-9).
The total length of the cable assembly is 32 ft., which leaves about 12
ft. of slack.
I was able to achive a transfer rate of 38,400 baud with this cable
assembly. I haven't yet tried any higher speed, but 38,400 baud is
pretty fast. In addition, the serial line tester is really nice to
have; it's like having external modem indicator lights!
I'll continue with this setup as it seems to work very well.
