Reminds me of the 80186 and 80286... the
286 could only do 16/24 bits, and it had a grunged protected mode nobody truly wanted to use (in the DOS
world anyway) so it was really an over-glorified 8088 in real mode. I think it's more of what technology was capable of for the
times (with production and cost constraints), than with anything
else.
