Googling, I see my TW has an early kind of ribbon cable according to one
previous post; one known for developing problems in the DIL connector
for the CPU socket. (The post I found implies that there is a
newer/improved kind AE offered, identified with a black mark on the ribbon).
Does anyone make new ones, ideally long enough to let the card sit
comfortably in Slot 4? I'm emailing SSH about them, since I've decided
to go for the 32K cache assuming I have appropriate GALs (again, I've
read in places that having the updated CPU installed means the GALs are
basically irrelevant - they are the only worry for me since they cannot
be upgraded without buying loads of TW's to find the correct ones!).
Also - it occurs to me that modern technology could help make Transwarp
ownership less fraught. Specifically, the screen-printed dual-layer
ribbons that they use in modern laptops and the like. More flexible than
the ribbon cable, lighter, could be made much smaller, and the molex end
could have one of those pull straps on making it easier to remove. I
know people make these in relatively low runs - the Apple Newton
community gets small ones made up for eMates to cure a common problem.
Not sure how to cure the DIL header, but I know that parts exist for
this which could be higher quality than the AE provided components -
round, gold-plated pins for example. I've seen these used on BBC
computer upgrades.
