I completely agree with everything you said.

IMO, the optimal option for all concerned - if you must indulge in a Color
Classic fetish, upgrade it all the way up to a Takky. You'll get to use OS
9, run Bernie (quite well I might add) and have your Ethernet too.... and
you can also add a TV card, if you really want to go all out. Watching TV on
a monitor that small is annoying though.
