But of course, back then you'd likely be dialing to a specific computer,
unless Arpanet, rather than the arrangement we see today where you
connect to your ISP, then do a search, and then get the data.

My first access, ca. 1984, was Apple II to Vax at 300 baud, with Kermit handling my end with VT-100 emulation. When 1200, 2400, and speedier modems came along, it didn't seem like things could get much better.






I was still using a IIGS to access that account in 1995 from half way across the country, with a local ISP in the middle, but telnet in now.
