I took the entire unit apart and saw no obvious damage. I don't have the the 
know-how to diagnose it any further, so I ended up just scrapping it for the 
hard drive and the power connector. The power connecter is now attatched to 
a small AT-style power supply, which is working fine with the platinum IIe 
so far.
