Actually, there is a known bug in ProDOS 1.4 regarding AppleShare use, 
which may or may not be causing your issues. Unforunately this version
was shipped with the AppleShare utilities. You should upgrade it to
at least 1.9, or if you've got a copy 2.0.3

I run AppleShare on my IIe against various Mac hosts, and also against my
Linux box which is running the netatalk package (visible to the localtalk
network via LocalTalk bridge running on a Quadra I have lying around)
