At one point, when I upgraded the HD on my GS from a 100MB to a 120MB
drive, I made certain that I formatted it with the Adv.Disk.Util with
the Mac Generic SCSI driver in the driver folder. This allowed me to
hook up the drive (2 30MB ProDOS partitions, rest HFS) to the Mac I was
using at the time (Quadra 650) when I needed to. (I was using the
patched HFS.FST on my GS.) I pretty much left it alone and just used
both machines, but when I got to the point where the only thing I was
doing with my GS was playing a game or two, (and had upgraded the Mac to
a PPC able to run Bernie,) I took down the GS, but first hooked up the
GS to my Mac so I could make disk images of all three partitions. In
about 2 years of time, I ended up with no errors on the HFS partition
according to Apple's testing app and Norton 3.5.
So, I'd have to say in my opinion, that if you're running a GS with an
HFS partition(s), it should be pretty solid...if you're running it on a
battery backup so there's never a problem during writes. (I never used
a battery backup, but the power generally seems to be pretty solid where
I live. I was very likely lucky...)
But, if formatted correctly, Macs that can be used to test HFS
partitions can be found fairly cheap. And they can make a pretty good
peripheral for the GS.
