Copy Files from an Apple IIGS to a PC

I know this has been posted many times but I don't seem to have found
a good solution (i.e. A to Z) for what I need to do.  I want to get
some old (as in, version 3.0) Appleworks files from the 3.5 disks to
the PC so that I can archive them.  From what I understand, the only
way to do this is to get some sort of hardware solution for the Apple
such that it can write to a PC formatted disk, or set up communication
between the two computers through a serial or parallel port.

Would someone please point me to resources that will enable me to do
this, if it can be done?  I don't have an external modem for the
Apple.  If the two computers can be connected directly, what cables
(and connectors) would be needed to do this?  What software would be
needed to set up communication?
