There is space. The programmer wants it faster,
smaller and also able to leave room while not
touching anything else in the rom. The self-
test in the IIc is important. We don't want to
lose any part of existing ROM.

In Aux ROM, the space from $6000- almost $7FFF
is free. That is more than enough room for a
Smartport driver.
