You'll need to install the drivers for the CD-ROM drive. These are
included on the System 6 disks. You can copy them across manually, but
the easiest way is to insert the disk labelled Install and run the
Installer. Click "Customize" to go to the customised installation screen,
and from here you can select "Drive: CD-ROM". This will install the
drivers for an Apple SCSI card (although they should already be
installed on your system) and CD-ROM drive, the FST for the High Sierra
CD format (precursor to ISO9660) and the NDA "CD Remote" which can be
used for playing audio CDs. If you haven't already done it you can also
use the installer to add the HFS file system so you can read Macintosh
CD-ROMs.

You will need to make sure you have the SCSI chain set up correctly. It
should be terminated at the start and end, and the devices should be set
to different IDs. If you have it, the manual for your SCSI card will
explain this.

To play audio CDs you will also need to connect speakers to the drive.
The computer can't read audio data from the drive.
