     The chip may normally run hot. Even so, getting some air moving across the
hot IC is probably a good idea. 

     Seems unlikely that the hot Math CoProcessor chip is causing the crashes,
especially if boot problems show up when the machine is first turned ON.

     It may be that your power supply is too heavily loaded. The added load of
drives during boots, glitching on the Slot power bus, low noise margins, ...
could result in errors that might not affect the IIgs Self Test but could lead
to crashes in regular use.

     Does the IIgs boot okay with the PC Transporter board removed?
